Wow, this new project sounds like some of the best pairings you could imagine. “Godzilla Minus One” and “Godzilla Minus Zero” director Takashi Yamazaki has landed his second high-profile Hollywood project with “Nue,” which is going to be at 20th Century Studios and has Ridley Scott backing it via Scott Free. Sadly, while “Nue” is going to be an original film from Yamazaki, we’re going to have to wait for further details, as those are being kept in the vault for the time being, as the project reveal, as mentioned by The Hollywood Reporter, was missing any concrete information on it.
“‘Nue’ has been a lifelong dream of mine. I am honored to have the opportunity to make it happen with the creative brilliance of Ridley Scott and Scott Free and the fantastic team at 20th Century Studios. I will do my utmost to ensure this becomes a fantastic movie for all to see,” said Yamazaki in an official statement posted by THR.

Scott has his new post-apocalypse action thriller “The Dog Stars” coming next month, and given his production banner’s backing of the latest era of the “Alien” franchise, having him attached for an original sci-fi from Yamazaki feels like one of the better moves from studio head Steve Asbell to get more genre projects at the studio in movie theaters (original or not). “We’re delighted to be working with Takashi Yamazaki and his team on this magnificent original sci-fi film for our partners at 20th Century Studios,” said Scott of the new creative partnership for “Nue.” “We’ve long admired Takashi’s visionary and skillful storytelling, exemplified by his superb production of Godzilla Minus One. We’re looking forward to helping him bring this major project to life to audiences around the world.”
This isn’t the only big feature in the works in the West for Yamazaki, as his other movie “Grandgear” sees him partnering with J.J. Abrams/Bad Robot, with Sony Pictures set to release the pic on February 18, 2028 (after it had a big announcement back in April at CinemaCon). Given that Sony has already slated “Grandgear” for early 2028, there is an expectation that it will go into production next year, so something like “Nue” likely won’t be happening anytime soon.
Yamazaki made a massive splash, to put it lightly, with his modestly budgeted “Godzilla” film (it ended up beating out $100-200 million budgeted films for a Best Visual Effects Oscar statue). His follow-up “Godzilla Minus Zero” (it will have an American setting and involvement of U.S. forces battling the King of Monsters) is going to be heading to the big screen on November 6, 2026, with GKIDS handling the North American distribution.
