'Deadpool,' 'Suicide Squad' And Five Other Films Can Still Win 2017 Makeup And Hairstyling Oscar

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed the seven finalists for the 2017 Makeup and Hairstyling nominations, and as with the other category shortlists revealed last week, there were some surprising omissions.

Potential nominees “Jackie,” “Fences,” “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” “Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them” and “Alice Through The Looking Glass” did not make the cut. Instead, the following seven films were selected.

Deadpool
The Dressmaker
Florence Foster Jenkins
Hail, Caesar!
A Man Called Ove
Star Trek Beyond
Suicide Squad

“A Man Called Ove” is Sweden’s submission for the Foreign Language Film Oscar and made the shortlist for that category last week.

All members of the Academy’s Makeup Artists and Hairstylists Branch will be invited to view 10-minute excerpts from each of the seven shortlisted films on Saturday, January 7. Following the screenings, members will vote to nominate three films for final Oscar consideration. Why this category continues to be limited to just three nominees is puzzling, however.

Nominations for the 89th Academy Awards will be announced bright and early on Tuesday, January 24.

The Academy Awards itself will be held on Sunday, February 26.
