Mads Mikkelsen Says 'Doctor Strange' Will Have A "Different Flavor" From Other Marvel Movies

Certainly as far as the first trailer goes, “Doctor Strange” is looking like something defiantly different from what we’ve seen from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The first trailer was kind of bonkers, and for someone like me who knows absolutely zero about the source material, played like heady mash-up of “Inception” and “The Matrix” on steroids. And while the final product will probably ultimately follow the familiar beats of an MCU entry, Mads Mikkelsen — who plays the film’s mysterious and still under wraps villain — says the movie will be offering a twist on the expected.

“If you look at the comic books, the comic books are quite different [to other Marvel stories]. I think that the film will be different from the other [Marvel] films that we’ve seen, but not as different as the books are, because that was basically the ‘60s and ‘70s – it was more like an acid trip,” he told Yahoo.

But don’t think you’ll be getting a totally psychedelic Marvel, though it seems that the exploratory era that informed the comics will still be felt here.

“We’ve taken that fascination of the time into something we can relate to today,” Mikkelsen added. “So you still have the energy, you still have the colours, you still have the madness, but you also have something you can identify with. I think that was a necessity – if not, you would just make a crazy film. But you still have it there – you have all the action, all the good ingredients you get in a Marvel film, but it will have a different flavour, that’s for sure.”

That’s certainly an intriguing way to tease what’s to come, and I presume we’ll find out a lot more at San Diego Comic Con next month. “Doctor Strange” opens on November 6th.
