Matt Reeves Talks Potential 'The Batman' Trilogy

We’re going to be hearing a lot about “The Batman” in the next little while, if only because director Matt Reeves is doing the circuit for “War For The Planet Of The Apes” and will be asked about it endlessly. So far, we’ve heard about his plans for “noir-driven, detective version” of the character, and his hopes to make a “very emotional” movie. Now comes word about a possible string of films, because there’s no such thing as just one standalone picture these days.

Fandango asked the director about whether or not there could a potential trilogy with “The Batman,” perhaps not unlike ‘Apes,’ and the director shared that something was percolating that would extend beyond a single film.

“I have ideas about an arc, but really, the important thing is just to start… you have to start with one,” he explained. “You know, you have to start with a story that begins something. And I would be lying if I could tell you that the arcs of ‘Apes’ was already planned out, because it simply wasn’t; it’s one of those things where that character was so potent, and the possibility was embedded from the beginning, but exactly how you’ve got from A to Z is not something that existed.”

So it sounds like Reeves is mapping something out, and we’re pretty sure DC Films honcho Geoff Johns will only be encouraging when it comes to DC Films’ flagship character. There’s no release date yet for “The Batman,” but we’re sure Reeves will get right to it once his obligations on ‘Apes’ are all wrapped up.
