Oh, how the mighty have fallen. Deadline reports that Henry Cavill‘s follow-up to his upcoming “Highlander” leading role will be, and this is no joke, a spy-action comedy opposite Kevin Hart for Netflix. The still-untitled project will be helmed by McG, of all people, too. It’ll be the director’s sixth film for the streaming giant, the most recent being 2024’s YA sci-fi adaptation “Uglies.”

But back to this spy pic. With Hart on board, it’s not surprise the set-up is, yawn, an odd-couple comedy in a similar vein to 2016’s “Central Intelligence.” Cavill and Hart will lead the film rival spies who cross paths in a Lamaze class, where their wives become fast friends, and their double lives subsequently start to collide in increasingly dangerous ways. And there’s a path to fatherhood/mature masculinity element to the story, too; in other words, standard superficial procedure for a Kevin Hart vehicle.
Adam & Aaron Nee and Jonathan Tropper will pen the film’s script, based on a short story by Sean Lewis. The producers on the project should also give a clue as to what kind of comedy this will be. They include Shawn Levy, Dan Levine, and Emily Morris for 21 Laps; Ryan Reynolds, George Dewey, and Patrick Gooing for Maximum Effort; and Hart, Luke Kelly-Clyne, and Brian Smiley for Hart Beat.
Cavill adds this Netflix spy-comedy to a list of upcoming projects that includes Chad Stahelski‘s aforementioned “Highlander” reboot, and Rawson Marshall Thurber‘s “Voltron“ over at Amazon MGM. The actor stars next in another Netflix film, “Enola Holmes 3,” premiering on the streamer on July 1. Cavill also recently starred opposite Jake Gyllenhaal in Guy Ritchie‘s long-awaited “In The Grey,” which finally hit theaters last month courtesy of Black Bear.
As for Hart, upcoming films for him include two sequels: “Jumanji: Open World,” in theaters on December 25, and “Ride Along 3.”
McG took a break from Netflix for his last film, helming “The Way Of The Warrior Kid” over at Apple Studios. It debut on Apple TV on November 20.
Expect production on this spy comedy (and the nadir of Cavill’s filmography) to get underway later this year.
