Steven Soderbergh Flips Through The Panama Papers As Possible Directorial Project

If you’ve even vaguely followed the career of Steven Soderbergh, you’ve likely learned long ago that trying to predict his next move is a fool’s errand. The filmmaker is always looking for a challenge, and consistently has an eye for material that offers something different, and allows him to test his talents. That why over the past few years we’ve seen him go from stripper dramedy “Magic Mike” to period-based medical TV drama “The Knick” to the upcoming NASCAR heist comedy “Logan Lucky.” And thus, it’s not a big shock that Soderbergh is now eyeballing something that will take him in a completely new direction.

Soderbergh will produce, with an eye to direct, a movie about the Panama Papers scandal that emerged earlier this year, that detailed financial malfeasance and fraud by some of the world’s biggest leaders and best-known celebrities. The film will be based on the forthcoming book “Secrecy World” by Jake Bernstein, with Scott Z. Burns (“The Informant!,” “Contagion,” “Side Effects“) penning the script. Basically, if this is like “Traffic,” but delving into the corridors of power and finance, count me in.

Development is already underway, and it sounds like no-brainer material, particularly if Soderbergh is able to line up a top-notch cast (he usually is). For now, his eye is on “Logan Lucky” which will start shooting this fall.
