Watch: 'Son Of Saul' Director László Nemes' 14-Minute Debut Short Film 'With A Little Patience'

Laszlo Nemes garnered a lot of attention last year for his Oscar-winning Holocaust drama “Son Of Saul.” The filmmaker took an unconventional approach to the narrative by immersing the audience in the constant presence of our protagonist, with the camera never leaving Saul’s perspective.

In 2007, Nemes made his debut, directing the 14-minute short “With A Little Patience,” about an office clerk, going about her day, seeing the Nazi occupation of her country unfold. The meat of the short — ten minutes, twenty-three seconds — is done in one consecutive take, and it’s easy to see where ‘Patience’ is Nemes’ test-run for “Son of Saul.” WWII setting, the camera always capturing the protagonist’s perspective, and the 1.37 : 1 “Academy” aspect ratio to narrow the scope are all early indications of where he would go with his acclaimed feature.

Like ‘Saul,’ ‘Patience’ is an effective and haunting piece of work, so be sure to check it out above.
