16 Films To See In January: ‘28 Years Later 2,’ ‘The RIP,’ ‘Send Help’ & More

People We Meet on Vacation” 
Based on the immensely popular romantic comedy from author Emily Henry, “People We Meet on Vacation” marks the first – and unlikely the last – adaptation from her work. The film follows two friends, Poppy (Emily Bader) and Alex (Tom Blyth), as they navigate the complexities of their relationship through their annual summertime adventure. Brett Haley directs the film. 
Release Date: Available to stream on Netflix on January 9.  

All That’s Left of You” 
Written, directed by, and starring Cherien Dabis, “All That’s Left of You” tells the moving story of a Palestinian family over the course of three generations. The film details their journeys and the moments of conflict that lead up to a teenager being confronted by Israeli soldiers in the West Bank, and how the events leading to that moment connect back to his grandfather’s displacement from Jaffa in the 1940s. Saleh Bakri, Mohammad Bakri, Adam Bakri, Maria Zreik, Muhammad Abed Elrahman, Sanad Alkabareti, and Salah El Din all star. 
Release Date: In theaters January 9 via Watermelon Pictures. 

Magellan”
Gael García Bernal stars in the historical epic, “Magellan” as the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan. Directed by Lav Diaz (“Phantosmia”), the film follows the navigator and his rebellion against the Portuguese king’s power, detailing his work in the 16th century. Selected as the Philippines’ entry for the 2026 Academy Awards (though it wasn’t included in the short list), the ensemble consists of Ângela Azevedo, Amanda Arjay Babon, Ronnie Lazaro, Hazel Orencio, and more. 
Release Date: In theaters January 9 via Janus Films. 

Dead Man’s Wire
Director Gus Van Sant returns for his first film since the 2018 “Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot.” Written by Austin Kolodney, the film follows Tony Kiritsis and the crimes he committed in the 1970s, including his kidnapping of his bank mortgage holder, whom he takes hostage. Bill Skarsgård plays Kiritsis alongside Dacre Montgomery, Cary Elwes, Myha’la, Colman Domingo, and Al Pacino
Release Date: In theaters January 16 via Row K Entertainment.

28 Years Later: The Bone Temple
Nia DaCosta joins the zombie franchise with “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple.” Written by original “28 Days Later” scribe Alex Garland, the film takes place following the events of “28 Years Later,” with Spike getting inducted into the gang of acrobatic killers. Ralph Fiennes, Jack O’Connell, Alfie Williams, Erin Kellyman, and Chi Lewis-Parry all star along with Cillian Murphy, who reprises his original role. 
Release Date: In theaters January 16 via Sony Pictures Releasing. 

Sound Of Falling
Following the lives of four girls across different periods in history, “Sound of Falling” seeks to showcase how they’re somehow linked. Directed by Mascha Schilinski and co-written by Schilinski and Louise Peter, the film won the Jury Prize at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. The story follows Alma, Erika, Angelika, and Lenka throughout time, from World War I to the early 21st century. Hanna Heckt, Lena Urzendowsky, Laeni Geiseler, Susanne Wuest, Luise Heyer und Lea Drinda star. 
Release Date: In theaters January 16 via MUBI.
