Andrew Garfield is taking up arms against the English crown in “The Uprising,” a historical rebellion drama written and directed by Paul Greengrass. The official trailer is now online ahead of the film’s September theatrical release.
Garfield stars as the legendary leader of a ferocious uprising against the tyranny of King Richard II. As war spreads across England, he assembles an army of ordinary people prepared to challenge the king’s forces in a battle for justice and survival.
The material places Greengrass back in the politically charged territory that has defined much of his career. From “United 93” and “Captain Phillips” to “The Bourne Supremacy” and “The Bourne Ultimatum,” the filmmaker has repeatedly explored individuals caught inside violent historical forces and institutions pushed to the breaking point. “The Uprising” transports those instincts to 14th-century England, turning a revolt against royal power into a large-scale survival thriller.
Jamie Bell, Stephen Dillane, Tom Hollander, Cosmo Jarvis, Thomasin McKenzie, Jonny Lee Miller, Woody Norman, Katherine Waterston, and Sky Yang round out the ensemble. Greengrass produces alongside Jason Blum, Gregory Goodman, Joanna Kaye, Joe Neurauter, and Lars Sylvest.
The September 11 release also places “The Uprising” directly in the fall-festival corridor. TIFF begins on September 10, meaning Toronto could technically host an opening-night premiere, but it would leave virtually no runway before the film reaches theaters. Venice runs from September 2 through September 12, giving Focus Features a far more natural launch window ahead of the domestic opening. A Venice debut, therefore, seems like the likelier possibility, although no official festival plans have been announced.
Focus Features will release “The Uprising” exclusively in theaters on September 11. Watch the trailer below.
