Lord & Miller Say The ‘21 Jump Street’/‘Men In Black’ Crossover Nearly Happened & “Was Very Funny & Crazy”

If you remember the highly-successful comedy sequel, “22 Jump Street,” the end credits featured a seemingly endless number of joke-y titles for further sequels featuring the duo of Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum. And believe it or not, some of those were actually in development. But the strangest and most intriguing of the rumored sequels was a crossover between the “21 Jump Street” franchise and the “Men In Black” franchise. And according to the writing/directing duo of Phil Lord and Chris Miller, that crazy idea was quite close to actually happening.

Speaking on the Happy. Sad. Confused. podcast, Phil Lord and Chris Miller talked about the “21 Jump Street” franchise and what sequels were in development for a long time. They also hinted that perhaps we still haven’t seen the end of the Jonah Hill/Channing Tatum partnership.

“It’s true that there have been a lot of these things developed. There was, believe it or not, a ‘Men In Black’/’Jump Street’ crossover script that was very funny and very crazy that we really adored,” said Lord.

Milller added, “One of my favorite ideas was the ‘Men In Black,’ the Black Suits were like martial arts belts that you had to work your way up to black and [the ‘Jump Street’ guys] were issued powered blue Men In Black suits.”

What does a “21 Jump Street”/“Men In Black” film actually look like? Apparently, it’s just as ridiculous as you would expect.

“Basically, the idea was Jonah and Channing, a thing happened while they were doing their medical school adventure that got them embroiled into the world of ‘Men In Black’ and that got them teaming up to stop an alien takeover type of thing,” explained Lord. “It was very funny, it was crazy trying to manage these two franchises and not drive them both into the ground seemed like a real challenge.”

“I will say it came very close to happening,” Miller said. “Very, very close,” Lord added.

Asked, are any of the various “21 Jump Street” films are still in development, the pair said, “Softly? Softly.” “It’s not not being developed,” Miller said hinting that at least something is being worked on, but probably not in a rush to go before cameras.

So, while we wait for another “21 Jump Street” film, we can ponder what a glorious, ludicrous film the “Men In Black” crossover would have been. Maybe, just maybe, with Hollywood’s love of revivals and whatnot, we might still get that made. It’s not like the “Men In Black” franchise is going strong right now, anyway.
