Goodbye TIFF: Wrapping Up And Signing Off With Patrick Watson

It won’t mean much to those that weren’t there, but at the beginning of every Toronto Int. Film Festival movie, a little intro was played with a lovely, bittersweet track by Canadian artist Patrick Watson.

Hailing from Montreal, we discovered him in 2004, when we did a big piece on the Montreal music scene (before the NYTimes, btw), but we had kind of forgotten about him. When TIFF started, we didn’t know the name of the song exactly, (it’s called “Luscious Life”), but we knew it was Watson immediately. So ‘goodnight and goodbye’ from Toronto. Back to our regularly scheduled program on Monday with probably 2-3 run off pieces of video we haven’t uploaded yet. Oh and if you like the tune, go out and support Watson. We did and paid $15 bucks for his 2006 record, Close To Paradise, which houses the aforementioned sweet track.

By the way, if it isn’t obvious, we’re pleased as punch that “Slumdog Millionaire,” won the top People’s Choice award. If we were forced to say what our favorite films of TIFF ’08 were, it was likely Danny Boyle’s “Slumdog,’ then the “Chemovies, then strong shout outs to “$5 Dollars A Day,” “The Wrestler,” and “Gigantic;” but there were a ton of good movies (that we took in despite the shitty weather and rain).

A Woman In Berlin” was pretty great, too. We’re also not surprised to hear that “Hunger” won a top prize either. It was on the top of our list of things to screen at TIFF, but we didn’t arrive in Toronto until after it was done playing. We’ll be seeing that and things we missed, like “Religulous” and “Zack And Miri Make A Porno”, very shortly; so stay tuned. Thanks to any who cared to follow our coverage or watch our silly, self-indulgent videos. Dodic says goodbye too.
