“Independence Day: Resurgence” is now in theaters, and while a decidedly underwhelming $4 million in previews at the box office suggest that the new film is going to be another underperforming summer sequel, it seems like someone still wants Roland Emmerich to destroy some shit, as the helmer of this film, its predecessor and “The Day After Tomorrow” has set up a new disaster movie. And it sounds like the Roland Emmerich-iest thing ever made.

According to Deadline, the helmer has, with “2012” co-writer Harald Kloser and newcomer Spencer Cohen, written a spec script called “Moonfall,” which Universal have just paid big bucks for. It’s described as a mix of Emmerich’s “2012” and “Close Encounters Of The Third Kind,” which sees “an unlikely band of misfits” attempting to stop the moon from, yes, falling on Earth.
That will either sound awesome or the worst thing ever depending on your take on the director, but either way, Universal have fast-tracked the film, so expect it by 2018 or so. And if nothing else, we’d rather see him blowing shit up than making another “Anonymous” or “Stonewall.”
