First Look: Lars von Trier’s ‘The House That Jack Built’

You don’t have to like the cinema of Lars von Trier to appreciate his penchant for marketing. “Nymphomaniac” had a clever campaign with o-face posters, and provocative clips, and the provocateur is certainly stirring interest in his upcoming serial killer flick “The House That Jack Built” before a single frame has been shot.

“On the occasion of the shooting of ‘The House That Jack Built,’ I have made an evocative photo with a cinematic reference,” he told Variety. And the image, that you can see in full below, is clearly inspired by 1932’s “Vampyr,” directed by Carl Theodor Dreyer, a favorite of von Trier’s.

As for ‘Jack,’ it stars Matt Dillon and Bruno Ganz, and is set in Washington during the ’70s and ’80s, with the story spanning 12 years, and told from the point of view of Jack, a serial killer, who tries to finish his “masterpiece” as he eludes capture. More casting is to come, including four prominent female roles.

“The House That Jack Built” is planned to be ready for release in 2018.
