And the remakes keep a-coming. Robert Rodriguez (“From Dusk Till Dawn,” “Sin City”) has been hired by 20th Century Fox to remake the 1981 John Carpenter classic “Escape From New York.” Fox won a bidding war for the rights to the reboot in 2015 and has high hopes to reinvent the property as a “Planet Of The Apes”-esque franchise. What studio isn’t trying to turn every brand into a franchise?

The reboot is on more solid ground than most, as Rodriguez and Carpenter have collaborated before, Carpenter having hosted the first episode of Rodriguez’s El Rey Network’s anthology series, “The People’s Network Showcase.” Carpenter also will serve as an executive producer and have a large say in the tone of the film. Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman’s The Picture Company is set to produce, and Neil Cross (“Luther”) will pen the script.
The deal further cements Rodriguez and Fox’s partnership, Rodriguez having just wrapped filming “Alita: Battle Angel,” co-written by James Cameron and starring Rosa Salazar and Christoph Waltz, for the studio. Personally, I’m more intrigued as to who could possibly fill Kurt Russell’s shoes as the new Snake Plissken. Perhaps David Harbour if “Stranger Things“‘ schedule permits… [Deadline]
