Got a Tip?

Rob Liefeld Says Marvel Will Still Make A ‘Deadpool’ Animated Series

When the first “Deadpool” arrived in theaters back in 2016, many believed that the Merc with a Mouth would be a flash in the pan, and his comedy, fourth-wall-breaking antics would eventually grow stale. But here we are, in the beginning of 2019, and the Ryan Reynolds character is still as popular now as ever before, thanks in no small part to the fact that 2018 saw three versions of “Deadpool 2” be released (original, Super Duper, and Christmas varieties). And according to Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld, there very well could be yet more Deadpool-ness coming to fans in the future.

We all know the story about the failed “Deadpool” FX cartoon that was to be spearheaded by Donald and Stephen Glover. The highly-publicized cancellation of the series, in the middle of development, caused quite a stir in the comic book fandom community. That was exacerbated by Donald Glover’s not-so-private tweets about the events, including a little script he wrote explaining the behind-the-scenes machinations. But, in a new interview with Nerdist, Liefeld explains that perhaps there’s hope still for a “Deadpool” cartoon.

While he admits that he has “no inside information,” he does relay a statement that was given to him by someone in the know at Marvel. “Don’t worry, Robert, we’re going to give you a ‘Deadpool’ cartoon,” said an unnamed Marvel executive to Liefeld.

Now, take that for what it is – a speculative statement given by the biggest Deadpool fan of them all, Rob Liefeld. But there’s one thing about Liefeld that gives that statement a bit of weight – the creator is one of the most sincere folks in the industry. Rob Liefeld doesn’t say something unless he means it, so if he says that a Marvel exec told him that, there’s nothing that has me doubt that claim. The only question is whether or not the exec in question was just blowing smoke or if there’s another attempt at the cartoon in the pipeline.

As far as interest in a cartoon series goes, fans have been clamoring for a “Deadpool” series for ages, and that was only made worse when the Glover debacle happened. And with this character, in particular, there is so much that can be done in the world of animation that makes the idea almost too good to pass up.

We’ll just have to wait and see.
