'Haunting Of Hill House' Filmmaker Mike Flanagan To Direct & Produce New Netflix Horror Series 'Midnight Mass'

The duo of filmmaker Mike Flanagan and producer Trevor Macy have taken the horror world by storm in recent years. Starting with 2014’s “Oculus,” Flanagan and Macy have teamed up on projects like “Hush” (one of the most underrated horror films in recent years), “Gerald’s Game,” “The Haunting of Hill House,” and most recently, “Doctor Sleep.” And now, they’re sticking with their Netflix partners and working on a new horror series titled “Midnight Mass.”

Deadline is reporting that Mike Flanagan will direct the pilot episode and will produce “Midnight Mass” alongside Trevor Macy. The series tells the story of a young priest that comes to an isolated island community and with him, brings all sorts of miraculous events, as well as frightening omens. Sadly, if you’re a fan of comic books, you’ll notice that this doesn’t have anything to do with the popular Vertigo series “Midnight, Mass,” as this new series is not related to the comic in any way.

As mentioned, Flanagan and Macy have been pumping out new horror projects with pretty great frequency in recent years, with many of them turning out to be critically-acclaimed, popular hits. Most people will probably recognize the duo from their work on last year’s breakout Netflix series “The Haunting of Hill House,” which is based on the classic Shirley Jackson novel of the same name. That series is set to return in a new iteration called “The Haunting of Bly Manor” sometime later this year.

Flanagan is also prepping the release of “Doctor Sleep,” the highly-anticipated sequel to the Stephen King novel and Stanley Kubrick film, “The Shining.” That film is poised to be the director’s huge breakout after finding success of the streaming service most recently.

No release date is mentioned for “Midnight Mass.”
