‘DAAAAAALI’ Teaser: Quentin Dupieux Brings His Absurdist Style To A Biopic Of Iconic Artist Salvador Dalí

Quentin Dupieux is a filmmaker who is known for drastically switching subject matter between films. Sure, most of his films are incredibly surreal and absurdist, but he will do a film about a oversized fly and then follow it up with a film about cigarette-inspired superheroes. So, with that in mind, can you actually be at all surprised his new film, “DAAAAAALI,” puts a spin on the story of artist Salvador Dalí?

Though it doesn’t give much away in terms of plot, you can definitely get the vibe of “DAAAAAALI” based on the new teaser that was released. Given Dupieux largely makes French films, it’s not shocking that his teaser is in French, but it’s not like there’s much being said other than “Dalí” over and over again. This is, as mentioned above, a biopic about an artist who clearly has influenced the filmmaker.

The teaser does show, if nothing else, Dupieux is using the filmmaking trick of multiple actors taking on the role of Dalí in the film. However, instead of going for some sort of realism, the actors all look very different from each other, except for the iconic facial hair. It can’t be stated enough that Dupieux isn’t interested in telling the most straightforward of stories.

We saw “DAAAAAALI” at this year’s Venice FIlm Festival, and in our positive review of the movie, we said, “It’s a playful vision that allows for many contradictions — the superficial and the profound, the boring and the thrilling, the ugly and the beautiful — and for an endlessly creative vision of art and cinema.”

It’s unclear when we might see “DAAAAAALI” arrive in North American cinemas. Though a bit later than much of the world, Dupieux’s work always seems to find its way across the ocean. But in the meantime, we can watch the French teaser below.
