As seen in the teaser, “The Regime” follows the story of a woman (Winslet) who is the Chancellor of a European country. With the help of her right-hand man, she is attempting to secure her power while things begin to unravel around her. After seeing Winslet portray so many normal, sympathetic characters, it’s fun to watch her fully embrace a larger-than-life persona that is perhaps just a bit evil.

Starring alongside Winslet in the cast are Matthias Schoenaerts, Guillaume Gallienne, Andrea Riseborough, Martha Plimpton, and Hugh Grant. Not a weak link among them. Particularly, it’s nice to see Schoenaerts and Riseborough get prominent roles in this series, as both are criminally underrated and should be much bigger stars than they already are.

The series is written and showrun by Will Tracy, who is probably best known for his work as a writer of “The Menu,” as well as “Succession.” Previous to that, he spent quite a while as a staff writer on “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver,” a show that knows a thing or two about poking fun at governmental bodies. “The Regime” is directed by Stephen Frears and Jessica Hobbs.

“The Regime” is expected to arrive on HBO and Max on March 3.
