It looks like Steven Soderbergh is going to start 2025 as he does most years—working on a brand-new film. This time, the prolific filmmaker is working on a dark comedy, “The Christophers,” and he’s seemingly found his new cast.

According to Deadline, Ian McKellen, Michaela Coel, and James Corden have signed on to star in Steven Soderbergh’s new film, “The Christophers.” The film tells the story of the estranged children of a famous artist. They develop a plan to hire a forger to finish their father’s paintings so they can sell them. The script is written by Ed Solomon, someone who has collaborated with Soderbergh on a number of projects including “No Sudden Move,” “Full Circle,” and “Mosaic.”

McKellen has most recently been seen in films such as “The Critic,” “Infinitum: Subject Unknown,” and “The Good Liar.” As for Coel, she’s probably best known for her award-winning HBO series, “I May Destroy You.” And Corden, who spent quite a while as a talk show host, has recently been seen in “Cinderella” and “The Prom.” His next film is “The Smurfs Movie,” which is expected in 2025.
2024 was an unusually quiet year for Soderbergh. He did debut his new drama, “Presence,” at Sundance, but that film isn’t getting released until January. That means, technically, 2024 was a full year without a new film from the director, which is an odd occurrence. 2025 is going to make up for it, as it’s likely to feature “Presence,” as well as his next film, “Black Bag.”
With production beginning in February for “The Christophers,” given how quickly Soderbergh is with turning around a film, it’s not crazy to think we could see it sometime in 2025, as well. Or perhaps, he’ll hold onto it for 2026. We’ll have to wait and see.
