As the “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” title would suggest, this could become Ethan Hunt’s “final” mission, but will it really? Audiences will have to find that out for themselves on May 23 when the eighth installment hits theaters. A reimaging of the iconic spy TV series that first graced screens in the form of a feature film in 1996 (thanks to director Brian de Palma) ‘Mission Impossible’ has endured when so many blockbusters have fizzled out. Thankfully, Paramount was wise enough to spring for a pricey Super Bowl promotion for the upcoming action film with new footage in the form of a trailer/TV spot (See below).
Of course, “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” is the continuation of the story first told in “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning,” with the significant threat being an artificial intelligence entity that has capable prediction abilities and its own deadly henchmen doing its bidding to boot. While we saw the death of team member Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson) in the last installment, it remains to be seen if others, such as Hunt and his loyal IMF crew, will survive this latest adventure, given there seem to be more stakes here than usual.
Tom Cruise, the patron saint of modern Hollywood action films, is back as his iconic veteran spy (Hunt) with an impressive supporting cast that consists of Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Vanessa Kirby, Esai Morales, Pom Klementieff, Mariela Garriga, Henry Czerny, Holt McCallany, Janet McTeer, Nick Offerman, Hannah Waddingham, Angela Bassett, Shea Whigham, Greg Tarzan Davis, Charles Parnell, and Frederick Schmidt.
Christopher McQuarrie returns as the sequel’s director and co-wrote the script with Erik Jendresen (“Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning”). The filmmaker is poised to keep pressing on with his longtime working relationship with Cruise on multiple projects in development. Still, Cruise has seemed to hit pause while attempting to work with the likes of Alejandro G. Iñárritu (“The Revenant”) and a gestating reunion with Doug Liman (“Edge of Tomorrow”) on another handful of ideas.
However, we’re cautious to predict what happens next with their future contributions to the “Mission: Impossible” property. We’re only too aware of the lengthy and mildly contentious production to complete the last two entries that started when COVID-19 first swept the United Kingdom and Europe, putting massive strain on everyone involved for years.
“Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” should employ some intense and gob-smacking stunts, which has become much of a calling card for the films and Cruise to outdo themselves with increasingly more dangerous attempts at entertaining a global audience hungry to see Cruise’s death wish play out. Again, the movie comes out on May 23 via Paramount, and we couldn’t be more excited to see Cruise running his little action-star heart out one more time.
