Walt Disney Studios already teased it was about to happen on Friday, but on Sunday, it became official:“Zootopia 2” has crossed the $1 billion mark worldwide. The Walt Disney Animation Studios sequel earned another $26.3 million in the U.S. and $877 million overseas for a new global cume of $1.136 billion. It becomes just the second movie that opened in 2025 to earn a billion after the live-action adaptation of “Lilo & Stitch” racked in $1.038 billion this summer. Oh, and yes, it’s now the no. 1 English-language global release of the year.

“Zootopia 2” also found its way back to No. 1 at the domestic box office after“Five Nights at Freddy’s 2” took the top spot last weekend. The Universal Studios and Blumhouse Productions thriller dropped to second place with another $19.6 million and $95 million in the U.S. and $173.7 million so far globally. Despite a 70% drop from its opening weekend, the video game adaptation is a massive hit for all involved after reportedly costing just $50 million.
Third place went to another Universal release, “Wicked: For Good,” which earned another $8.5 million for $312 million in the U.S. and $468 million worldwide.
Among new releases, the critically slammed “Ella McCay” pulled in just $2.1 million in 2,500 theaters for a not-so great $840 per screen. James L. Brooks‘ first theatrical release in 15 years, “McCay” earned just a 37% score on Metacritic and a 23% on Rotten Tomatoes. At a reported cost of $35 million, the 20th Studios release is decades away – if ever – breaking even. Why Disney decided to release this film during the crowded and busy holiday frame is still somewhat baffling.
Cineverse also dropped a remake of “Silent Night, Deadly Night” through Fathom Releasing, which pulled in $1.1 million in just 1,640 venues for a weak $683 per screen.
Additionally, the re-releases of “The Shining” and “How The Grinch Stole Christmas” took in a respective $1.5 million and $1.85 million each.
For films still in theaters, the Hindi-language action flick“Dhurandhar” continued its impressive run, taking in another $3.5 million in just 377 theaters for a fantastic $9,284 per screen and $7.8 million in the U.S. so far. GKIDS’ anime release “Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution” dropped 79% for another $2.1 million and $14.5 million to date (it’s now far and away the biggest grosser in the history of the indie distributor).
A24’s “Eternity” hit $12.9 million, “Rental Family” reached $9.6 million, Chloe Zhao’s “Hamnet” crossed $7 million in the U.S., while “Predator: Badlands” hit $90 million domestic and $181 million globally.
New films arriving in wide release on Friday include“Avatar: Fire and Ash,” “The SpongeBob Movie: Search for Squarepants,” and“The Housemaid.” “Marty Supreme” and“Is This On?” open in limited release.
