‘The Death Of Robin Hood’ First Look: Hugh Jackman, Jodie Comer & Bill Skarsgård Star In “Intense” Thriller From Michael Sarnoski & A24

Director Michael Sarnoski, known for the Nicolas Cage-led “Pig” and “A Quiet Place: Day One,” is back with his latest genre flick, “The Death of Robin Hood,” which stars Hugh Jackman (“Deadpool & Wolverine), Jodie Comer (“28 Years Later”), Bill Skarsgård (“Welcome To Derry”), Murray Bartlett (“The White Lotus”), and Noah Jupe (“Hamnet”).

Thankfully, Entertainment Weekly has shared the first batch of stills from the “intense” fantasy thriller (Robin Hood, despite being a beloved English folklore hero, was a fictional person) that sees Jackman in the role of the legendary fictional bandit, but in a very much grizzled and older version than we’re maybe used to seeing in big screen adaptations with actors like Russell Crowe, Taron Egerton, or Kevin Costner in that part.

In the new movie, critically injured and reflecting on a life of crime and murder, Robin Hood’s (Jackman) fate is now in the hands of a mysterious woman (Comer).

Sarnoski also told EW he’s pulling from early tales and amping up the dark side of both Robin’s activities as a bandit robbing the rich and the brutal warfare of the era, “It almost gets towards feeling like a war movie. Fighting back in those days was brutal; it wasn’t people dancing around and fencing. It was people in the mud trying to crack each other’s heads open with a shovel…There are five early ballads of Robin Hood that were first written [as the story] was passed down as oral tradition. And they’re really brutal. He is portrayed as a hero of the common man, but they’re still somewhat horrifying, in the way that old folk tales are. There’s an old quote about Robin that sort of says he’s this murderous bandit who the common folk have decided to glorify, and I wanted to examine someone who was going through that in their lifetime, and trying to grapple with the role of storytelling and their actual identity.”

We should also point out that Sarnoski and A24 (who are releasing “Robin Hood”) are already set for a big reunion on a live-action feature film adaptation of the wildly popular post-apocalyptic sci-fi video game “Death Standing,” which has an impressive cast including Norman Reedus, Lea Seydoux, Mads Mikkelsen, Margaret Qualley, and Troy Baker (who played Joel in the original “The Last of Us” games).

We’re still waiting on a first-look teaser trailer that could be the next big promotional material from the film to be released in the coming months. Those new stills from “The Death of Robin Hood” can be viewed below, featuring Jackman, Comer (confirmed by Sarnoski as not playing Maid Marian), and Skarsgård (a version of Little John, Robin’s protege) as the movie is heading to theaters in 2026 (we’re still waiting for a concrete date from A24).
