Glen Powell is heading back to the football field, but keeping Chad Powers alive is apparently getting a whole lot harder.
Hulu has unveiled the first trailer for Season 2 of “Chad Powers,” the football comedy Powell co-created with Michael Waldron, with the entire new season set to premiere September 3. After Season 1 ended with Russ Holliday’s elaborate second identity finally beginning to crack, the new episodes put even more pressure on the lie that resurrected his football career.
The series follows Russ, a disgraced former college quarterback who, eight years after destroying his career, disguises himself with prosthetics and walks onto the struggling South Georgia Catfish as the awkward but gifted Chad Powers. The first season ended with Ricky (Perry Mattfeld) discovering Chad’s real identity while Coach Hudson (Steve Zahn) suffered a heart attack, leaving Russ’ second chance suddenly in jeopardy.
And according to Powell, Season 2 changes the show’s gears considerably.
“This season has the engine of a thriller. It’s still really damn funny,” Powell told Entertainment Weekly, explaining that the stakes surrounding Russ’ deception become much more serious.
The new season finds Russ and Danny trying to keep Chad alive long enough to finish the regular season and potentially take the Catfish to the College Football Playoff, all while Ricky now knows exactly who is hiding beneath the wig, prosthetics, and Southern drawl.
Returning alongside Powell are Mattfeld, Zahn, Quentin Plair as Coach Byrd, Wynn Everett as Tricia Yeager, and Frankie Rodriguez as Danny. Season 2 also expands the ensemble with guest stars Colin Woodell, Gillian Jacobs, Carey O’Donnell, and Nate Varrone.
“Chad Powers” originated with the character Eli Manning created for an ESPN+ “Eli’s Places” segment, in which he disguised himself with prosthetics to participate in a college football walk-on tryout. Manning and Peyton Manning executive produce the scripted series alongside Powell and others.
