‘The Retrievals’: Emilia Jones To Lead Netflix Drama From ‘Maid’ & ‘Sirens’ Creator Molly Smith Metzler

The series adapts the acclaimed podcast about women who endured painful fertility procedures after a nurse stole fentanyl intended for their treatment.

Emilia Jones has found her next major television role. The “CODA” and “Task” star will lead the cast of “The Retrievals,” Netflix’s upcoming drama series from Molly Smith Metzler, the creator behind “Maid” and “Sirens.”

Based on the Peabody Award-winning New York Times and Serial Productions podcast of the same name from journalist Susan Burton, “The Retrievals” dramatizes the disturbing true story of patients at the Yale Fertility Center who underwent IVF egg-retrieval procedures without the pain relief they had been promised. Nearly 100 women were affected after a nurse stole fentanyl intended for the procedures, leaving patients in excruciating pain while their complaints were repeatedly dismissed.

Netflix describes the series as following one woman’s crusade against the fertility center and the unlikely community that forms as the women begin challenging one of the country’s most powerful institutions. The streamer has also suggested the drama won’t be entirely grim, describing the story as both powerful and “surprisingly funny.”

Metzler will write, showrun, and executive produce the series, continuing her relationship with Netflix after “Maid”—the series that brought Margaret Qualley much acclaim— and last year’s Julianne Moore-led “Sirens.” LuckyChap, the production company founded by Margot Robbie, Tom Ackerley, and others, is also executive producing alongside Colin McKenna, New York Times executive Caitlin Roper, and Burton.

Behind the camera, Emmy-winning “Succession” filmmaker Andrij Parekh is set to direct two episodes and serve as cinematographer on the first. Parekh revealed his involvement at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in July.

Jones, meanwhile, has steadily built on her breakthrough in Sian Heder’s Best Picture-winning “CODA,” recently starring opposite Mark Ruffalo in HBO’s “Task.” “The Retrievals” will also mark a return to Netflix for the actress, who previously starred in the streamer’s fantasy series “Locke & Key.”

Netflix has not announced a premiere date for “The Retrievals,” but given the success of Metzler’s other shows, this should be a well-anticipated series in 2027.
