Co-directors/co-writers Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley (“Game Night”) are back with a new Apple film, “Mayday,” that stars Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh, with the latter playing a U.S. fighter pilot in the action-comedy trapped behind enemy lines in Soviet Union territory during the Cold War. Well, they were promoting “Mayday” during San Diego Comic-Con, and the topic of a sequel to “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” came up, with a surprising reveal: a script exists.
While speaking with ScreenRant, Goldstein revealed that despite being hired by Paramount Pictures to co-write a sequel script with his creative partner, he’s not sure if the fantasy comedy led by Chris Pine will ever see the light of day.

“They’re expensive movies to make, but it’d be great fun to do it…We actually wrote a sequel to ‘Dungeons & Dragons.’ We were hired to write it. I don’t know that it will see the light of day for a number of financial reasons. They’re expensive movies to make, but it’d be great fun to do it. We love that cast, and we think we wrote something that fans would like.”
The first installment of “Dungeons & Dragons” (based on the classic pen-and-paper fantasy game) only mustered $205.4 million on a reported $150 million budget; it’s hard to see the studio’s point of view in not continuing with more movies when they weren’t able to make bank on the last one. Although Paramount has enlisted the writing/directing duo for a new “Star Trek” reboot film, so they obviously want to keep that working relationship going. Although we’re unlikely to see Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Justice Smith, Regé-Jean Page, and Sophia Lillis return to those “D&D” roles anytime soon.
Hypothetically, given their recent working relationship with Reynolds (who showed up in a denim Deadpool costume during the Marvel Studios presentation) on the upcoming “Mayday” (arriving on September 4), we could envision the directors being potentially recruited by Marvel Studios to helm the gestating “Deadpool 4“ while Shawn Levy is busy with “Ghost Rider,” starring the other Ryan from Canada, Ryan Gosling (poised to begin filming next year for a release in theaters sometime in 2028).
