The brainchilds behind “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” will embark on a new journey over at Paramount, boldly going where no one has gone before.
Okay, so that last part isn’t entirely true, but it’s one of the most iconic phrases from the IP John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein will take over for their next project. THR reports (via Deadline, who broke the news first) that the pair will write and direct an all-new “Star Trek” movie after they wrap work on “Mayday” over at Apple. It’ll be a fresh start for the franchise, too, unconnected to the recent spate of movies led by Chris Pine. A potential fourth film in that series was finally nixed by Paramount earlier this month, motivated by the desire for something “fresh.”
Daley and Goldstein may be the right guys for the fresh start the studio wants, too. “Honor Among Thieves” was a sneaky hit for Paramount two years ago, with 2018’s “Game Night” also performing well in theaters. Paramount will need for Daley and Goldstein to wrap work on “Mayday“, an Apple Original Film starring Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh, before they take on “Star Trek,” however. That film should reach audiences sometime next year.
It makes sense that Paramount would want to reboot “Star Trek.” It’s been nine years since “Star Trek Beyond” hit theaters, and, like its 2009 and 2013 predecessors, its box office numbers weren’t incredible. A fourth film in that franchise languished in development since then, with directors like Noah Hawley and Matt Shakman, as well as an R-rated script by Quentin Tarantino, all attached at some point. In 2023, Pine remarked that “Star Trek” was “cursed,” and opined that the franchise’s inability to reach MCU-like commercial numbers may be a significant factor in Paramount’s reluctance to greenlight a fourth film.
Now we’ll see if John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein will provide the antidote to the “Star Trek” franchise Paramount wants. When should fans expect the first reboot film in theaters? 2028 is a safe bet, but who knows?
