One of the more exciting remake announcements of the last couple of years is the new “Irma Vep” TV series that is coming to HBO from A24 and filmmaker Olivier Assayas. The critically-acclaimed feature from 1996 is getting expanded into a TV series, written by Assayas, with Alicia Vikander on board to star in the lead role. And now, if that wasn’t exciting enough, we now know some of the supporting cast that will appear in “Irma Vep,” featuring some of the most talented folks around.
According to Variety, Adria Arjona (“6 Underground,” “True Detective”), Carrie Brownstein (“Portlandia,” “Transparent”), Jerrod Carmichael (“The Carmichael Show,” “Ramy”), Fala Chen (“The Undoing,” “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings”), and Devon Ross are all attached to star in “Irma Vep” for HBO/A24. For those that haven’t seen the original film, “Irma Vep” features Vikander in the lead role of Mira, an American actress that has grown to become disillusioned with the business and her career, specifically. So, she heads to France to star in a production of “Irma Vep,” a remake of the French film, “Les Vampires.” While there, the character and the woman start to merge, with frightening results.
In the series, Arjona is set to play Mira’s girlfriend and ex-assistant. Brownstein is expected to play Mira’s agent. Carmichael is playing Mira’s ex-boyfriend, as they reconnect in Paris. Chen is set to play an up-and-coming Hong Kong actress to star opposite Mira in the film. And Ross will play Mira’s assistant and filmmaking hopeful.
It’s unclear when “Irma Vep” will begin production, but with casting already coming together, it’s clear A24 and HBO are moving ahead pretty quickly on the new limited series.
