Looks like we were a dismal 1 for 5 on our Telluride wishlist/prediction piece, but no matter as there is still a lot to get excited about. The folks out in Colorado have unveiled their slate with the festival kicking off tomorrow, and it's a great mix of premieres and gems from Venice and Cannes.
Leading off the pack of movies getting screened for the time is Ramin Bahrani's "At Any Price," starring Zac Efron and Dennis Quaid; Noah Baumbach's shot-on-the-sly "Frances Ha," starring Greta Gerwig; Bill Murray as FDR in "Hyde Park on Hudson"; Michael Winterbottom's five-years-in-the-making "Everyday"; Sally Potter's somewhat mysterious "Ginger and Rosa"; Deepa Mehta's "Midnight's Children"; and the star-studded Marilyn Monroe documentary "Marilyn, Love."
Other highlights include one of the Cannes Film Festival's biggest hits, "The Hunt," which earned Mads Mikkelsen Best Actor honors; Pablo Larrain's hugely praised "No" starring Gael Garcia Bernal; Jacques Audiard's fantastic "Rust & Bone"; Michael Haneke's wrenching "Amour"; Sarah Polley's deeply personal documentary "Stories We Tell" (which we just saw and loved in Venice); and Ken Burns' "Central Park Five."
As we predicted, the only Weinstein appearance at Telluride is with their crowd-pleaser "The Sapphires," which will be a good augur of any potential awards possibility for the pic (which has been described by some as this year's "The Help"). Check out the main slate line-up below (the fest also has retrospective programs as well including a 70mm screening of "Baraka," two older films by Werner Herzog and more).
The Telluride Film Festival runs August 31st through September 2nd and yep, we'll be on the ground so stay tuned for reviews.
