Could you imagine waiting four decades to win an Oscar? When Amy Madigan earned her first Oscar nomination for Bud Yorkin’s long-forgotten “Twice in a Lifetime,” the year was 1986. Ronald Regan still had two years left in his second term. Cell phones and the internet were future gizmos that few thought would become part of everyday life. In 2026, Madigan finally landed a second Supporting Actress nomination and, now, her first Academy Award statue, for her iconic performance as Aunt Gladys in Zach Cregger’s “Weapons.”

In an incredibly competitive field, Madigan triumphed over Teyana Taylor (“One Battle After Another”), Wunmi Mosaku (“Sinners”), Elle Fanning (“Sentimental Value”), and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas (“Sentimental Value“). While Mosaku took the BAFTA Award last month, Madigan won the SAG Actor Award. Madigan also won a slew of critics’ group prizes for her work, including the New York Film Critics Circle, Boston Society of Film Critics, and the London Film Critics Circle, among others.
Madigan is a two-time Independent Spirit Award nominee, a Primetime Emmy Award nominee, and a Golden Globe winner. Her career across film and television spans 45 years and includes movies such as “Places in the Heart,” “Streets of Fire,” “Field of Dreams,” “Pollock,” “Gone Baby Gone,” and “Rebuilding.” Her television work includes acclaimed performances in “The Day After,” “Roe vs. Wade,” “The Laramie Project,” and “Carnivale.”
She’ll be seen next in the Netflix series “All the Sinners Bleed” and James Ponsoldt‘s Apple Studios film “Sponsor,” opposite Jason Segel and John C. Reilly.
