I think we all knew this was coming after Lionsgate‘s “Michael” made a hefty $991.4 million at the global box office, as studios and creative teams scramble to get their own music world biopics together. A Britney Spears feature film in the works at Universal Pictures, based on the life of the American pop star, with “New Girl” and “Dying For Sex” creator Liz Meriwether (co-created the latter) set to write the script for director Jon M. Chu and producer Marc Platt.
That news is coming from Page Six Hollywood, as they reveal that Meriwether has been tasked to polish a script that had been drafted by Chu and Platt. That previous draft was an adaptation of Spears’ bestselling memoir, “The Woman in Me” (so, it will likely be authorized). Other credits under Meriwether’s belt include “The Dropout,” the upcoming Hulu FBI series “Furious,” and the rom-com “No Strings Attached.”

Some of the events that could be covered in the film would be her being thrust into superstardom at such a young age (the oddness of becoming somewhat as the sex symbol successor to Pamela Anderson as a teenager), her romance with fellow musician Justin Timberlake (the two met during their time on “The Mickey Mouse Club” series revivial, which also featured a young Ryan Gosling) and their messy breakup, alongside Spears’ dramatic behind-the-scenes family dynamics, her harassment by tabloids/paparazzi, short-lived marriages, and eventually being placed under a controversial conservatorship, as she dealt with various mental health issues.
Of course, Spears’ string of hits over the years includes “Baby One More Time,” “Oops!… I Did It Again,” “Toxic,” “(You Drive Me) Crazy,” “Boys,” and more that accompanied music videos, back when they were still blasting on repeat on MTV (before the cable network focused on reality shows).
Now, they’ll have to find the right actress who can handle dance sequences, as Spears is better known for her energetic and elaborate stage performances than strictly for her singing. Cannot wait to see who they ultimately land on for that key role.
