Producer Amy Pascal Says There's "No Time Table" for 'Venom 2' Despite An Apparent October 2020 Release Date

After the massive box office success of last year’s “Venom,” you would imagine that Sony is trying to get the sequel up and going as soon as humanly possible. Of course, when you rush things, that’s when films tend to fall apart. It appears that the studio isn’t trying to ruin the newly-launched “Venom” franchise that quickly and producer Amy Pascal is keeping mum about when we might see Tom Hardy’s Marvel anti-hero come back to the big screen.

Speaking to Comicbook.com, Pascal was asked about the incredibly surprising success of “Venom,” and particularly about when superhero fans might see the ‘Spider-Man’ spin-off character return in theaters.

Before she talked sequel news, she raved about Hardy’s portrayal and said, “Tom Hardy’s Venom was absolutely, bar none, unbelievable. He is so good. Nobody else could be that character.”

As for details about “Venom 2,” Pascal was tight-lipped and only went so far as to say that the film is in development.

“Yes, [‘Venom 2’] is in the works,” revealed Pascal.

But when she was pressed about when we might see the sequel to the 2018 film, the producer simply stated, “No time table.”

This is slightly surprising given that Sony has slotted an October 2, 2020 release date for an “untitled Marvel film.” Given that “Venom” was released in October 2018 and that date worked out so well before, combined with the fact that “Morbius” is already arriving before the 2020 date, there aren’t many films that would fit the timeline other than “Venom 2.”

That being said, if Sony’s desire is to get “Venom 2” in theaters in 2020, filming would have to begin shortly, at least by this fall. The last thing the studio wants is to rush the sequel to their hit film and find themselves stuck in an ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ situation where the franchise is dead before it really begins.

So, while fans are hoping that October 2020 is when we’ll see the sequel, for now, we shouldn’t mark that on the calendar in pen. Let’s just stick with the nice erasable pencil.
