It would seem that Antoine Fuqua is doing anything but shooting the long-gestating Tupac Shakur biopic. After some drama earlier this year in which he left the project, and then was lured back in a lucrative pay-or-play deal, the wheels on that picture still seem to be at a halt and the director is still attaching himself to more options.
So, what else now bears the name of Fuqua? Summit has picked up the rights to John Huddy‘s non-fiction book “Las Vegas: How a Cuban-Born, Soviet-Trained Commando Took Down The Strip to the Tune of Five World Class Hotels, Three Armored Cars, and Millions of Dollars” and attached Fuqua to direct. Bearing the title of “Storming Las Vegas” when the film eventually hits a multiplex near you, the true story centers on Jose Vigoa, a Cuban-born commando veteran of the Soviet army and a modern day Robin Hood. He hit Las Vegas in the 1990s and with this crew, they went on a 16-month crime spree targeted the biggest casinos in town. However, they would wind up squaring off against Lt. John Alamshaw, a veteran of the Vegas police department, tasked with bringing them down.
So, it sounds pretty good but it’s just one more of a handful of projects now crowding Fuqua’s plate. He’s got a sci-fi flick with Gerard Butler titled “Afterburn” on the table; a Chinese-language historical drama; the Eminem boxing movie “Southpaw” as well as “The Tomb” which Arnold Schwarzenegger was looking at earlier this year. As for “Tupac,” still no word if/when that’s going to happen as apparently, they are still finding their Lesane Parish Crooks. [Deadline]
