What’s this, another video game adaptation for Craig Mazin over at HBO? Indeed it is, and given the elements of “Baldur’s Gate 3,” this upcoming series should satisfy “Game Of Thrones” fans, too.

Deadline reports that Mazin has a drama series based on “Baldur’s Gate” in active development over at the network, which he’ll create, write, showrun, and executive produce. Unlike “The Last Of Us,” however, this show will be an original continuation of the video game’s story, blending characters old and new to navigate the fallout of Larian Studios‘ “Baldur’s Gate 3.” Expect this series to get greenlit once Mazin wraps “The Last Of Us” Season 3, which may be that show’s final season. It’ll be Mazin’s third series overall, after “The Last Of Us” and the 2019 limited series “Chernobyl.”
Other executive producers on “Baldur’s Gate” include Jacqueline Lesko, Cecil O’Connor, and Hasbro Entertainment‘s Gabriel Marano. Also involved are Chris Perkins, former Head Of Story at Wizards Of The Coast, the brainchild of the “Dungeons & Dragons” game universe.
In a press statement about the show, Mazin revealed his desire to make “Baldur’s Gate” stems from all the time he’s put into playing the video game and other D&D material. “After putting nearly 1000 hours into the incredible world of “Baldur’s Gate 3,” it is a dream come true to be able to continue the story that Larian and Wizards of The Coast created,” he said. “I am a devoted fan of D&D and the brilliant way that Swen Vincke and his gifted team adapted it. I can’t wait to help bring “Baldur’s Gate” and all of its incredible characters to life with as much respect and love as we can, and I’m deeply grateful to Gabe Marano and his team at Hasbro for entrusting me with this incredibly important property.”
“Baldur’s Gate 3” fans will be heartened to hear that Mazin plans to reach out to the voice cast of the video game to play returning characters on his show; that’s something Mazin also did on “The Last Of Us.” But the main emphasis will be on new characters and their journeys to heroism, with older characters there to help, hinder, or thwart their adventures. Also of note: Mazin will draw on the vast lore of the source material, and plans to have his show co-exist alongside Shawn Levy‘s “The Forgotten Realms” live-action show in the works at Netflix. That doesn’t mean crossover between the two series, only that the sprawling world will be big enough to accommodate both.
“Baldur’s Gate 3” is one of the most popular video game RPGs released in the 2020s. Along with its massive critical acclaim, the game has had over 15 million lifetime players to date, and has won 34 industry awards, including becoming the first game to win all five major Game Of The Year Awards. Larian Studios has no plans for a direct sequel to “Baldur’s Gate 3,” so news of Mazin’s show should please fans of the game.
