'Benedetta' Trailer: Paul Verhoeven's Latest Follows A Nun That Is Either A Saint Or A Sinner

Paul Verhoeven is a filmmaker that is often known for pushing boundaries of decency and taste in his films. We’re talking the filmmaker responsible for controversial features such as “Basic Instinct” and “Showgirls,” as well as genre-pushing films such as “RoboCop” and “Starship Troopers.” And even decades later, the filmmaker is looking to rile up audiences with his latest feature, “Benedetta.”

On paper, it would be very easy to write off “Benedetta” as the “lesbian nun movie.” However, as seen in the trailer, Verhoeven’s new film is much more than that. It’s a film that not only does question the chaste rules that nuns have to live by, but also takes a more wide view to look at religion and its effect on society. Much like Verhoeven’s filmography, “Benedetta” might seem like one thing on the surface, but there are definitely layers that go far deeper.

The new film stars Virgine Efira, Daphne Patakia, Lambert Wilson, and Charlotte Rampling. As mentioned, the film is directed by Paul Verhoeven, who co-wrote the feature alongside David Birke. The duo previously worked together on Verhoeven’s previous film, “Elle.”

We saw the provocative feature at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, and in our review, we said, “‘Benedetta’ is a hoot, but, unlike the virgin dildo, and unlike Verhoeven’s last brilliant provocation ‘Elle,’ it isn’t particularly penetrating.” Overall, however, we did end up praising the film.
