Got a Tip?

Best And Worst Of The 2019 Golden Globe Awards

This year’s Golden Globes had quite a few surprises, but then again it wouldn’t be the Golden Globes if there weren’t. Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg started the show with some playful jokes with the audience, the legendary Carol Burnett received an honorary award recognizing her decades of work, and some nominees may have received flu shots?

When it came to the awards, “The Americans” final season earned Best Drama Series and Netflix’sThe Kominsky Method” surprised with Best Comedy Series. Big winners of the night were “Green Book” taking home the Golden Globe for Best Comedy or Musical, “Roma” winning Best Foreign Language Film and Best Director for Alfonso Cuarón,  and in a major surprise upset, “Bohemian Rhapsody” taking home the Best Motion Picture – Drama prize. It was an interesting night, but what can we say, it was the Globes. Check out what we found to be the best and worst of the night below.

Best: Audience Interaction In The Opening Monologue
Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh’s wonky opening monologue got an assist from some expect and unexpected stars in the audience.  Lady Gaga yelled out “That’s right!” when the duo made fun of her “There can be 100 people in a room” line. Emma Stone yelled, “I’m sorry” when Oh mentioned the movie “Aloha” (Stoned played a character with Asian ancestry) and Jim Carrey, nominated for Showtime’s “Kidding,” had to move to from the movie to the TV section and wasn’t thrilled about it. – Gregory Ellwood

Best: Sandra Oh On Witnessing This Moment Of Change
Sandra Oh ended a so-so opening monologue with a very personal moment. She told the audience she agreed to take the gig because of this “moment of change” in the industry.  She isn’t sure if it will last forever, but this year? It’s here. “Trust me it’s real because I see you. I see you. I see all these faces of change. And now, so will everyone else.” –GE

Best: Regina King Vows To Support Women After  ‘Beale Street’ Win
Winning Best Supporting Actress in a drama for “If Beale Street Could Talk,” Regina King was deeply moved by the honor and decided to make a bold declaration: during her speech she King pledged to hire more women, at least 50%, on projects she produces and gave a shout out to Time’s Up. “I’m going to use my platform right now to say, in the next two years, everything that I produce I am making a vow — and it’s going to be tough — to make sure that everything that I produce…is 50 percent women. I challenge…anyone out there who is in a position of power — not just in our industry, in all industries— I challenge you to challenge yourself and stand with us.” The speech was met with great applause and a standing ovation by some as well.

Worst: HFPA Still Make Silly TV Choices Overall
Michael Douglas for Best Actor in a Series – Comedy or Musical?  Richard Madden for Best Actor in a Series – Drama? The former is a Hollywood legend and the later a growing fan favorite, but there were so many stronger choices in each category.   These were the most basic choices they could have made. –GE

Best: “The Americans” Win For Their Final Season
With Matthew Rhys earning an Emmy win for the final season of “The Americans” at the 2018 Emmy Awards, it felt like the entire show needed its due. That didn’t come at the Emmys, unfortunately, but at this year’s Golden Globes, the show, with a dedicated fan base and tremendous production walked away with its first (can you believe?!) and final eligible Golden Globe Award for Best Drama Series.   Julia Teti

Worst: Steve Carell Introduces Carol Burnett
It’s not that Carell said anything wrong in his introduction of Carol Burnett and we understand his “Daily Show” and “Office” credentials, but couldn’t they have found someone slightly more legendary to introduce this icon?  –GE
