Danny Boyle To Direct A Sex Pistols Limited Series For FX

The Sex Pistols are one of the most influential bands in music history. Coming into the music scene decades ago, The Sex Pistols were abrasive, loud, and didn’t give one single fuck about what you thought of them. And people ate it up. Of course, the band would fall apart almost as quickly as they became famous. The rise of the Pistols is one of the best stories of music in the 20th century and is now coming to FX as a limited series from filmmaker Danny Boyle.

According to FX, the network is getting ready to begin production on a new six-episode limited series, “Pistol.” Based on Steve Jones’ 2018 memoir “Lonely Boy: Tales from a Sex Pistol,” the new series, simply titled “Pistol,” tells the story of the formation of the punk band and how it would go on to change music and culture forever from the perspective of the band’s guitarist, Steve Jones. The series is created by Craig Pearce and written by Pearce and Frank Cottrell Boyce. And yes, Boyle is onboard to executive produce and direct the new series.

And it also appears that Boyle has found his cast for the limited series, which includes Toby Wallace as Steve Jones, Anson Boon as John “Johnny Rotten” Lydon, Louis Partridge as Sid Vicious, Jacob Slater as Paul Cook, Fabien Frankel as Glen Matlock, Dylan Llewellyn as Wally Nightingale, Sydney Chandler as Chrissie Hynde, Emma Appleton as Nancy Spungen, and Maisie Williams as punk icon Jordan.

“It’s great to be back in business with Danny Boyle, an exceptional artist responsible for so many great feature films and TV series,” said Nick Grad, President, Original Programming, FX Entertainment. “Steve Jones was at the center of the storm that shook the rock establishment and we’re thrilled to have Danny and the rest of the creative team tell his story as a member of one of music’s most notorious bands – the Sex Pistols.”

“Imagine breaking into the world of ‘The Crown’ and ‘Downton Abbey’ with your mates and screaming your songs and your fury at all they represent,” said Boyle. “This is the moment that British society and culture changed forever. It is the detonation point for British street culture…where ordinary young people had the stage and vented their fury and their fashion…and everyone had to watch & listen…and everyone feared them or followed them. The Sex Pistols. At its center was a young charming illiterate kleptomaniac – a hero for the times – Steve Jones, who became in his own words, the 94th greatest guitarist of all time. This is how he got there.”

Boyle is no stranger to musical projects. His most recent film, “Yesterday,” is a love letter to the Beatles. And he’s no stranger to “punk rock” sensibilities, as his breakout film, “Trainspotting,” has a vibe that we can only assume will be seen in “Pistol.” It’s unclear when we’ll see the new series arrive on FX, but we’re definitely excited.
