Will Ferrell Says He & Adam Sandler Are Trying To Make A Movie Together: “It’s On My Bucket List,” Ben Stiller Has Reached Out

Will Ferrell is considered by many to be American comedy royalty, which, oddly enough, happened well after his “SNL” tenure with films such as “Anchorman” and the equally hilarious two-hander “Step Brothers.” He’s back this summer with the new sports comedy series “The Hawk,” and considering it covers golf, the obvious Adam Sandler connection is hard to ignore (“Happy Gilmore 2” was also a Netflix original).

During a chat with Josh Horowitz for his podcast Happy Sad Confused, Ferrell talked up the idea he’s been trying to link up with Sandler for a movie (it feels crazy the two “SNL”cast members haven’t made a co-starring comedy after all this time). “It’s funny, too, because Sandler and I have texted. We’ve been kind of circling, trying to—Sandler, bless his heart, has been like, ‘Come on, buddy. We got to figure something out before we can’t move anymore’…I know. That’s on my bucket list.”

The funny man also talked about the idea of reuniting with Ben Stiller after working with him on the two “Zoolander” films, “And Ben reached out within the last couple years, as he’s wanting to get a little bit more back into acting and doing comedy and stuff.”

However, Ferrell is quite aware how tough it is for these things to happen due to scheduling: “It’s just, you know, it’s hard in that, if you’re thinking of other ideas, as time keeps moving on and everyone has their own little universes…You would think it’d be an easy thing, and I don’t know why it isn’t. We’re all just kind of like ships passing in the night, and then it’s not till you’re way far away from each other, like, ‘Wait, how have we not done a thing?’”

Another project on the horizon is a comedy-action at Amazon MGM Studios called “Tough Guys,” which pairs Ferrell with Ryan Gosling (another reunion of sorts as they both appeared in “Barbie“), who isn’t a stranger to comedies, with “The Fall Guy” and “The Nice Guys” being part of his more memorable recent humorous roles. “Ryan and I have a project together, and we’re banging it into shape. I would hope that—it’s an action comedy…It could be really fun. Yeah, it could be a really fun thing to do with him.”

Ferrell also discussed what drew him into working with Gosling and praised the Canadian actor, “He’s such an underrated—maybe not anymore—but, as a comedic personality, he’s a beast…That performance in ‘Barbie’—talk about commitment and just epic.”

“That should win the Oscar. What other actor can do this?,” Ferrell lamented that Gosling’s Ken performance didn’t earn an Oscar.

It would be kind of nice to see Will Ferrell, Sandler, and Stiller combine comedic forces, but who knows what the future holds for those gentlemen. “Tough Guys” certainly sounds like a project (it still needs a director attached for things to move forward) that the comedic actor is very much looking forward to, and he wouldn’t be the only one.
