Danny McBride's HBO Comedy 'Vice Principals' Will Wrap After 2 Seasons

Sometimes having the end in sight can be an asset, particularly in narrative television where a cancellation could leave story threads hanging in the air, and character arcs incomplete. Moreover, knowing you have a contained set of hours to tell a story could actually be freeing in allowing you to take the plot and players exactly where you want them to go, without wondering about the variables of television production forcing any compromise. This is a long way of saying that the upcoming “Vice Principals” will have a short and sweet stay on HBO.

With the comedy series starring Danny McBride, and from the team behind “Eastbound & Down” set to debut this month, it has been revealed that after two seasons and eighteen episodes, it’ll say farewell.

“The whole series is only 18 episodes and that’s it. We just wanted to make a really long movie. It’s one school year and a complete story,” McBride told Variety at the show’s premiere. “This was an old screenplay that [director] Jody [Hill] and I wrote back in 2006. But we needed it to be longer so we added and reworked it and broke it up into 18 segments.”

As fans might recall, McBride and co. said “Eastbound & Down” would be done after three seasons, only for them to be wooed by HBO to make a fourth and final set of episodes. But if the network comes knocking again, they won’t be lured back.

“No. We already shot the 18 episodes and that’s it,” Hill said.

So, there you go. “Vice Principals” arrives on July 17th.
