Indie Band Deerhoof Covers Famous Song From 'The Shining' For New Stanley Kubrick-Inspired Album

Deerhoof is a band that doesn’t easily fit into any one musical box, so to speak. The indie band has released over a dozen albums in the last 20 years that have run the gamut of musical influences. However, with their latest song, Deerhoof has decided to find inspiration from an unlikely source — Stanley Kubrick.

The band’s latest song, “Midnight, The Stars And You,” is actually a cover of a song that film fans will probably recognize but not know right off the bat. The cover is actually from an old Al Bowlly song that was used by Kubrick in the horror masterpiece “The Shining.” The song plays when Jack Torrance finds himself in the Overlook Hotel’s ballroom getting a drink from the lovely bartender Lloyd. “Midnight, The Stars And You” is heard playing in the background as the famous scene plays out.

Apparently, Deerhoof found inspiration with the film, as they titled their latest album “Deerhoof Plays Music of the Shining,” with the first single being the aforementioned cover. And while the original is lovely, and a song of its time, the Deerhoof cover sounds sweet, but with a definite creepy tone to the vocals.

And if the title of the album, and the cover song, weren’t enough to fully show the band’s love of Kubrick’s ‘Shining,’ then take a look at the album’s cover. Taking inspiration from the “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy” scene, Deerhoof has adopted the typewriter font to show the album’s title, in the same manic, repetitive way. And as icing on the Kubrick cake, the bad used the design of the famous Room 237 as the basis for the actual vinyl release.

You can listen to “Midnight, The Stars And You” and take a look at the album cover below. And for added fun, watch the corresponding clip from “The Shining” because we all know there’s never a bad time to watch Kubrick:
