'Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves' Trailer: Chris Pine Brings The Funny In Long-Awaited Fantasy Film

Typically, the fantasy film genre is defined by features such as “The Lord of the Rings,” where everything is treated with majesty and seriousness. A film like that wants the audience to be in awe of the visuals and believe they are witnessing something of great importance. “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” is like the drunk Uncle of those types of films. Sure, they share the same DNA, but it appears ‘D&D’ is here to party, and there’s a high likelihood that something embarrassing is going to happen.

As seen in the trailer for “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” the film definitely has all the tropes of a fantasy film. There are, as the name suggests, dungeons and dragons, but there are also wizards, knights, monsters, and all sorts of hallmarks of the genre. However, under the direction of Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, who both co-wrote the film alongside Michael Gilio, the new ‘D&D’ film is filled with quips and silliness that is more typical of comedies than a Tolkien-esque adventure.

Goldstein and Daley are best known for directing films such as “Game Night” and “Vacation,” while also writing films such as “Spider-Man: Homecoming” and “Horrible Bosses.” Needless to say, they aren’t hired for their astute visual language. These are guys who were brought on to infuse some serious humor and fun into what could be a film that only attracts die-hard fans of the role-playing game.

Another factor that might attract some normies to the world of ‘D&D’ is the cast, which includes Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis, Chloe Coleman, Daisy Head, and Hugh Grant.

“Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” debuts in theaters on March 31. You can watch the new trailer below.
