'El Chupacabras' Trailer: Blumhouse Teases Fake Issa López Horror Film As An April Fools Joke

Thankfully, it seems that, for the second year in a row, the number of April Fools jokes has decreased. Obviously, with a year-plus pandemic still causing issues with people’s day-to-day lives, we really don’t need silly fake news to pop up everywhere. But occasionally, some of it is fun and worthy of looking at, such as what Blumhouse released today.

As seen on the production company’s social media, Blumhouse teased fans with a brand-new film from acclaimed filmmaker Issa López titled “El Chupacabras.” The film is inspired by the legendary monster that has been part of folklore in the Latin community for years. Of course, there’s only one problem, the film is fake and not happening. But Blumhouse made a trailer to get people hyped anyway.

The reason this is a solid April Fools prank is because Blumhouse is known for creating horror films in record time and very little publicity, so the idea that the company had a brand-new film that we never heard about ready to go isn’t all that unbelievable. Add to it the fact that the “joke” is actually pretty interesting and would make for a film that I’d definitely watch, and you have an April Fools situation that I’m in full support of.

If for nothing else, hopefully, the prank will give people a better understanding of who Issa López is. The filmmaker is best known for her recent film, “Tigers Are Not Afraid,” which is an incredibly underrated, underseen thriller that people who are interested in Blumhouse material should check out. Also, it’s nice that Blumhouse is using her name for the film, as the company has already signed on to develop her next feature, “Our Lady of Tears,” which was announced last year.

So, even though most April Fools pranks are stupid and unnecessary, there’s one that is actually not all that bad and hopefully educates film fans about a director they might not have heard of yet.
