You don’t mess with what works, and when David Benioff and D.B. Weiss teamed to write and produce “Game Of Thrones,” they created a sensation no one could’ve predicted. And now, they are making the leap to feature films, and will have each other’s backs every step of the way.
The pair have signed up write and direct an adaptation of the Stephen Hunter thriller “Dirty White Boys.” The story follows three ex-convicts on the run from the cops, mixing both comedy and action. And yeah, that’s a big generic so here’s the book synopsis via Amazon:
After killing a black inmate, the brutal Lamar Pye breaks out of the Oklahoma State Penitentiary along with his retarded cousin, Odell, and a hapless artist-turned-felon named Richard. They embark on a desperate run across Oklahoma and Texas, pursued by state troopers. The escapees hide out with a convict groupie who has lived alone since murdering her parents as an adolescent. In a parody of domesticity, Lamar embraces these losers as the family he never knew. Unlettered Lamar is a natural leader, more intelligent by far than his pursuers, but his gang screws up every time at a terrible cost in bloodshed. Hunter’s portrayal of Lamar is unromantic but sympathetic. Lamar is a loser who never had a chance; he uses his short period of freedom to get his own back and to indulge in the mindless violence that is the only thing that truly satisfies and delights him. This seriocomic chase thriller packs a punch.
While Benioff and Weiss might be new to features, it’s not like they’re lacking experience in spectacle when it comes to writing, so this could be good stuff in their hands. However, Hunter’s last book to be adapted was “Point Of Impact” which turned into “Shooter” starring Mark Wahlberg. So, could go either way. No word yet on when this might roll, but it could be a long way off as Weiss tells Deadline that working on “Game Of Thrones” is a “52-week a year job.”
