Despite a number of gestating go-to film projects on Michael Mann‘s plate including a long gestating adaptation of Ernest Hemingway‘s “For Whom The Bell Tolls;” the medieval tale “Agincourt” based on the novel by Bernard Cromwell and the gangster pic “Big Tuna” being written by “Up In The Air” scribe Sheldon Turner it looks like movement is coming together on a film that has been kicking around for a little while now.
Speaking with Total Film (via Up And Comers) after being tipped by the mag as Hottest Actress of 2010, Gemma Arterton was more than happy to spill the beans on what she’s up to next. And one of those projects is apparently Michael Mann’s “Capa,” a biopic of war photographer Robert Capa and she says she will be joined by another hot actor, Andrew Garfield.
Speaking about her future film choices Arterton gushed, “But I’m aiming for even more diversity. ‘Capa’ is confirmed so I should be working with your hottest actor, Andy Garfield!”
Arterton will take over the role previously slotted for Eva Green, that of fellow photographer Gerda Taro whose romance with Capa is the focal point of Susana Fortes‘s novel “Waiting For Robert Capa” which is serving as the source material for the big screen film. Taro and Capa met in Paris in 1935 where to two began a two-year romance that ended when Taro was tragically killed in a road accident at the Battle Of Brunnete. Despite a later romance with actress Ingrid Bergman, Taro was reportedly the love of Capa’s life as he never married after her death and was found with only her photo in his wallet at the time of his death.
Jez Butterworth (“Fair Game“) is currently adapting Fortes’ book for the film that is set up at Columbia Pictures. We’ve wondered whether or not Mann would find difficulty financing his next pic given the expensive underperformers of recent films like “Miami Vice” and “Public Enemies” but with this cast and the previously reported “gritty, low-budget film” he’s aiming for, we have no doubt this one should come together fast. Additionally, Arterton confirmed that her planned film with Michael Winterbottom, an adaptation of Martin Amis‘ “London Fields” as well as “Clash Of The Titans 2” is also on her to-do list.
