Look out "Magic Mike," a new movie is coming to town that's gonna try and rival you in the beefcake department. But don't worry, it also sounds like one hundred bad ideas someone put together in a blender before hitting frappé.
Thompson On Hollywood reveals that Gerard Butler, Matthew McConaughey and Sam Worthington have been convinced, cajoled or blackmailed to star in the ridiculous-sounding "Thunder Run" from shlock director Simon West, who has not made a decent movie since his directorial debut "Con Air" (and sorry dudes, "The Expendables 2" is gonna suck balls). Anyway, while this does have some pedigree being based on correspondent Davd Zucchino’s novel "Thunder Run – The Armored Strike to Capture Baghdad," we're not sure why anybody would decide to make an Iraq war movie utilizing motion capture, 3D and CG. Seriously, what the fuck. But that's the depressing plan, so take a moment to digest that and then read the synopsis below:
Thunder Run is the untold story of the dangerous and bloody capture of Baghdad by American Forces at the onset of the Iraq War. In April 2003, three battalions and fewer than a thousand men launched a violent thrust of tanks and Bradley Fighting Vehicles into the heart of a city of five million, igniting a three-day blitzkrieg, which military professionals often refer to as a lightning strike, or “thunder run.” In telling the story of the surprise assault on Baghdad- one of the most decisive battles in recent American combat history—this movie paints the harrowing picture of the soldiers on the front lines and the realities of modern warfare.
Considering that the United States are now, finally, going to pull out of the fiasco that was the last eight years of the Iraq War, we're not sure why we need a rah-rah movie about a very brief, bloody moment in a conflict that everyone is tired off and agrees was misguided at best. And why that story needs to be mo-capped and 3D-ed and then dolloped in CG is fucking beyond us. This sounds like a horrible joke. But it's not, as Freedom Films and Graphic Film Company are producing with Hyde Park handling international sales. Freedom Films’ Brian Presley says the film will be the “first ever conventional war film made to utilize this revolutionary facial and motion capture technology and state of the art CG and 3D.” Just because you can do it, guy, doesn't mean you should.
