'High Fidelity' TV Series In The Works From Disney Featuring A Female Lead

So far, the upcoming Disney streaming service is a bit of an enigma. What was originally thought of as a place for Disney to put their immense library of titles has morphed into something that will easily compete with the likes of Amazon and Netflix. And after announcing a new “Star Wars” live-action series and another live-action remake of a classic film, it was assumed that Disney was going to skew more young with their service. But perhaps that’s not totally the case.

In a report from Deadline, the outlet breaks the news that Disney is adding another remake of another popular film to their streaming service, but with a twist. “High Fidelity,” the 2000 film featuring John Cusack is in early development by Disney as a new series on their streaming service. However, in this new iteration, the lead will be gender-swapped and played by a woman.

Deadline also says that the new series will depart more from the source materials (including the 1995 novel by Nick Hornby), but still keeping with the romantic comedy and “authentic spirit” of the film and novel. The story will revolve around a female record store owner talking to camera as she details her past relationships. The outlet also says that the content of the show will be toned down from the R-rated feature to a more PG-13 feel, to keep with their Disney brand.

The “High Fidelity” series comes from writers Veronica West and Sarah Kucserka, who are best known for work on “Bull” and “Ugly Betty.” The series will be produced by Midnight Radio and ABC Signature Studios, known for the critically-acclaimed “SMILF.”

“High Fidelity” looks to be the first major project announced for the streaming service that doesn’t fall into the superhero, kids, and sci-fi territories. This could point to the fact that Disney is hoping that their streaming service will be viewed right along Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu, by being a place where everyone can find something of interest. That is if you aren’t looking for extreme cursing and nudity.

“High Fidelity” joins the rest of the upcoming Disney streaming slate, which won’t be released until the service launches in 2019.
