While last year we heard that a handful of DC Studios projects were being delayed, there is word directly from co-studio head James Gunn that they’ve decided to shelve their feature adaptation of the mature DC project “The Authority,” created by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch in 1998.
Gunn posted the update on his official account on Threads, where filmmaker and studio head expanded on their reasoning to hit the pause button, as the timing hasn’t been great, and “The Authority” doesn’t gel with their current plans for the DCU.
“The script wasn’t quite there but more importantly it didn’t work in terms of the larger DCU both in terms of the story and practical concerns. Maybe some day. Not soon,” Gunn said of the status of the superhero project and denied that is going to be something he would have helmed himself.
Thankfully, Gunn doesn’t completely rule our circling back to “The Authority,” so fans shouldn’t be thinking they’ll never consider it down the line.
It’ll be interesting to see, in the future, if they simply lump it into an “Elseworlds” label (projects that aren’t directly set in the greater mainline DCU) or take their time to find a way to incorporate it after Gunn figures out his whole Justice Gang/League trajectory after “Man of Tormorrow,” which feels like it could be leading into other films like an assumed “Green Lantern” (Aaron Pierre would likely star in the hypotheical pic as John Stewart) alongside new solo films like “Wonder Woman” and the DCU Batman film “The Brave & The Bold.”
That said, we don’t know if something else has taken the project’s spot but Gunn also reiterated that both DC TV shows “Booster Gold” and “Paradisde Lost” are still in development after a lack of updates. Given DC Studios’ recent footprint on the small screen (“Peacemaker” and “Lanterns“), we wouldn’t be all that shocked if they did ultimately decided to turn “The Authority” into an HBO Max series, but that’s just speculation on our part going on Gunn’s recent comments about the movie being scrapped for the time being.
