‘Django/Zorro’ Crossover Film At Sony Getting New Script From Brian Helgeland, Based On Quentin Tarantino & Matt Wagner Comic

A while ago, filmmaker Quentin Tarantino had the bright idea of doing a crossover between the iconic swashbuckling hero “Zorro” and his bounty hunter hero (a former slave) character from “Django,” which was turned into a comic book that Tarantino put together with acclaimed comic writer Matt Wagner, and there was an attempt to make a movie before that vanished.

Well, there is word that Sony Pictures is actively adapting the comic with help from veteran screenwriter Brian Helgeland (“Fastkind”) being enlisted to pen a script for the film, according to a report from Deadline.

Back in 2022, we learned that Tarantino had approachedMask of Zorro” actor Antoino Banderas (a frequent collaborator of Tarantino’s longtime pal Robert Rodriguez and the lead of “Desperado,” where the director had a cameo), and that was back when QT was developing the feature with Jerrod Carmichael (which would end up being stalled) based on the comic published by Dynamite Entertainment.

While Oscar-winner Jamie Foxx portrayed Django in the 2012 film, we don’t know if he or Banderas would end up starring in this latest iteration from Helegland and Sony.

Helgeland, who is gearing up to direct Ice Cube and Tommy Lee Jones in the Neo-Western, “Outside Man,” has an impressive list of scripting credits, such as “Mystic River” and “L.A. Confidential.” He also co-wrote a script alongside The Wachowskis for the 1995 Sly Stallone and Banderas hired killer thriller, “Assassins,” helmed by the late Richard Donner.

The outlet added that while Tarantino won’t be directing he has given the project his “blessing” and is still expected to make his final film with Sony after “The Movie Critic” was scrapped and he handed David Fincher a script for “The Adventures of Cliff Booth‘ (a sequel to “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood“).
