James Wan Shoots Down 'Aquaman' Villain Rumors

To be honest, the last thing I care about are rumors about “Aquaman.” If I never see another DC Films production, at least in its current incarnation, it won’t be too soon. But there are those invested in the watery standalone, enough that whispers and speculations are flying around, to the extent that director James Wan has had to comment on them.

Apparently, certain corners of the internet have been tossing around the idea that “Aquaman” will feature three villains: Aquaman’s half-brother Orm, Black Manta, and King Nereus. Certainly, overstuffing a single movie would be nothing new for DC Films, but as per usual, it seems the imagination has run away from reality, with Wan firmly shooting down those theories.

“This is what I’ll say: I don’t have three villains,” the director told EW. “I think that’s ridiculous! I would never go into an origin movie with three villains. We don’t even know the main character let alone the world and its antagonist. I believe in taking baby steps.”

Even more, he clarifies who fans can expect to see in the story, from a villain perspective. “We know Black Manta is in there, but I will say this: Patrick Wilson is the main antagonist in this film. I wouldn’t necessarily say ‘villain,’ but he’s the antagonist.”

Wilson will be playing Orm, and it sounds like at the very least, he’ll get under the skin of his sibling, though not face off against him director. So, one-and-a-half villains then, I guess? We’ll find out when “Aquaman” opens on December 21, 2018.
