Jean-Marc Vallée Won't Be Directing 'Big Little Lies' Season 2

“…this is the perfect ending. There is no way; there’s no reason to make a season two. That was meant to be a one-time deal, and it’s finishing in a way where it’s for the audience to imagine what can happen. If we do a season two, we’ll break that beautiful thing and spoil it,” Jean-Marc Vallée was declared this spring about the potential for a second season of “Big Little Lies.” The director has since walked back his comments, but no matter, HBO is giving fans what they’ve asked for, but they’ll need a new filmmaker behind camera.

The Washington Post reveals that development is ongoing for the second season of “Big Little Lies,” but that Vallée will be stepping into a producing role. There’s no word yet if the team behind former limited series will once again find a single voice behind the camera, or go for multiple helmers like most series. However, Vallée is hardly on the outs with HBO. He’s got another very promising limited series in the can with “Sharp Objects,” based on the novel by Gillian Flynn, and starring Amy Adams.

More news on the next batch of “Big Little Lies” episodes should hopefully be coming soon, as HBO is aiming to start filming next spring. It’ll be interesting to see where the show goes next, but let’s hope they learned from “True Detective” season two, and don’t rush something out just to meet demand.
