'John Wick' Director Says He's "Open" To The Idea Of A 5th Film But It's Not A Guarantee

In just two weekends, “John Wick: Chapter 4” has outgrossed the domestic totals for the first two films in the franchise and is more than halfway to passing ‘Chapter 3.’ That is to say, ‘Chapter 4’ is already a massive success, and the “John Wick” franchise is stronger than ever before. Even still, a fifth film doesn’t seem to be a given, according to director Chad Stahelski. But he’s open to the idea of yet another ‘Wick’ adventure.

Speaking to THR, director Chad Stahelski opened up about the early success of “John Wick: Chapter 4” and the eagerness from fans hoping to see more adventures featuring Keanu Reeves killing lots and lots of bad guys. However, even with the success of the franchise and its growing box office, the filmmaker doesn’t just want to come back for a fifth film unless he and Reeves can come up with a story worth making.

“It’s very flattering for them to come back and, you know, say ‘We want more’ and it’s not just a cash grab. It’s legitimately the audience wants more,” Stahelski said. “I think we all need that little bit of time to go, ‘Whew. Let’s see what’s next.’ … If Keanu and I, a few months from now sit down at a whiskey bar in Japan again and go, ‘Yep, we’ll never do another one of those,’ and then all of a sudden go, ‘Yeah, but I got an idea,’ we’re open to it.”

This echoes the sentiments Stahelski has shared throughout the press cycle for ‘Chapter 4.’ It’s clear that the filmmaker, along with Reeves, doesn’t feel like he must make more ‘Wick’ films. Obviously, Lionsgate and the producers of the franchise would love to see more films in the main film series as the cinematic universe begins to expand. The studio and producers are prepping the release of “Ballerina,” which is the first film expansion of the ‘Wick’ universe, as well as the upcoming prequel series, “The Continental.” Even though those seem like sure-fire hits, as the ‘Wick’ franchise has yet to hit a speedbump, the big cash cow is clearly the “John Wick” films starring Reeves.

Regardless, it doesn’t appear that work on a fifth ‘John Wick’ film would begin anytime soon. But at least there’s hope that a new one could happen.
